Your initial consultation with Dr. Sina is an important first step in your “double chin” removal journey. Dr. Sina considers the consultation as both a meet and greet between him and his patients, as well as an opportunity for him to help educate patients about every facet of the surgical process. Patients seeking submental liposuction must have a very careful physical examination to determine if the cause of their “double chin” is excessive fat in space under the skin and above the platysma. This “plane” or layer is the only safe place to introduce a liposuction cannula and if the cause of the double chin is something other than excess fat in this plane, then submental liposuction is not a viable option.
If a patient is not a good candidate for submental liposuction, Dr. Sina won’t just turn you away, he will take the time to explain to you why and answer all of your questions. Additionally, he will present other treatment options that may be more suitable to your needs.
If you are a good candidate for submental liposuction, Dr. Sina will give you comprehensive instructions on how to best prepare for surgery, as well as the postoperative recovery. The Submental Liposuction Procedure
Submental liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure performed using just local anesthesia with the patient awake. The neck is injected with a combination of numbing medication and saline until the patient is completely numb. Then a total of three very small incisions are made – in the submental crease and behind each earlobe. Finally, the liposuction cannula is introduced on the layer under the skin but above the platysma and the excess fat deposits are “sucked out.” An experienced surgeon will know when all the fat is removed by carefully examining the patient during surgery. Once all the fat is removed, the incisions are closed with one suture each and a light neck wrap is applied. The procedure takes about 45 minutes and patients go home shortly after the procedure is completed.
What Is Submental Liposuction Recovery Like?
Submental liposuction surgery is very well tolerated by patients. Because it is performed in a minimally invasive fashion, patients don’t experience much discomfort after surgery. There may be mild soreness, swelling and numbness after surgery that will resolve in a couple of weeks.
When Will I See My Submental Liposuction Results?
There are a couple of different phases of recovery after submental liposuction surgery. In the immediate post-surgical period, the submental space will be swollen because of both normal post-operative swelling and because of the swelling that is attributable to the injection of local anesthesia. Typically, swelling from this first phase resolves in the first 1-2 weeks. The second phase of recovery is the time during which the skin and muscle begin to heal, reahere and tighten – this phase takes another 2-3 weeks. In all, patients can expect to be back at work within the first week after surgery and have noticeable results at 1 month.
