Functional Rhinoplasty in Las Vegas, NV

Functional rhinoplasty describes the non-cosmetic correction and restoration of nasal function including correction of a deviated septum, nasal airway blockage and nasal valve collapse. If functional breathing problems are robbing you of sleep, making exercise more difficult, causing chronic mouth breathing, etc. functional rhinoplasty might be the procedure for you.

Dr. Mehdi Sina is a board-certified facial plastic surgery specialist. He has extensive training in surgical procedures treating the functional issues of the nose, including septoplasty, nasal valve repair and turbinate reduction. While many patients only seek cosmetic improvements of the nose, Dr. Sina is keenly aware of the many patients whose lives are negatively impacted by poor nasal function such as difficulty breathing through one’s nose.

How Much Does Functional Rhinoplasty Cost in Las Vegas?

The cost of functional rhinoplasty in Las Vegas varies within a range, and depends on the causes of the functional issues and the number of procedures necessary to address the root cause of the functional impairment of the nose. Dr. Sina does not accept health insurance for the treatment of functional issues of the nose and he typically recommends that patients visit with a qualified ENT specialist that accepts their insurance. However, patients seeking cosmetic improvements in addition to functional improvements of the nose will have all of their functional issues corrected as a part of a comprehensive cosmetic rhinoplasty. If patients are interested in cosmetic enhancements of the nose, they should have BOTH cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty at the same time. With an experienced specialist, you are paying for high-end pre and postoperative care, the advice and technique of an expert surgeon, and the peace of mind that your treatment is in the best hands.

Once you meet with Dr. Sina for your comprehensive functional rhinoplasty consultation, he will create a custom surgical plan that outlines the techniques used in your procedure and provide you with an accurate cost estimate.

Am I a Candidate for Functional Rhinoplasty?

Patients who have limitations in nasal function and have identifiable causes of those functional issues are considered good candidates for functional rhinoplasty. For example, if a patient describes difficulty breathing through their nose and the nasal examination shows a deviated nasal septum, that patient will be a good candidate for a septoplasty.

Candidates for functional rhinoplasty:

  • Have addressed medical issues that may be contributing factors to nasal symptoms, such as allergies.
  • Have clear and realistic expectations for their functional improvements
  • Understand the risks and benefits of the procedure
  • Are in good health
  • Are nonsmokers or are willing to quit

A consultation with Dr. Sina is essential in determining if you are a good candidate for functional rhinoplasty. To schedule an appointment, call Vegas Facial Plastics today at (702) 890-8507 or fill out our contact form.

What Are My Functional Rhinoplasty Options?

Functional rhinoplasty aims to improve the patient’s breathing, either through correcting a deviated septum (misaligned cartilage), correcting nasal valve collapse, or through turbinate reduction, which reduces tissue from the internal nasal cavity to allow more airflow. It is possible for patients with functional issues to include cosmetic improvements in the same procedure.

Functional rhinoplasty procedures include:

  • Septoplasty
  • Internal nasal valve repair with spreader grafts
  • Turbinoplasty

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Your Consultation

The functional rhinoplasty consultation is a crucial part of the surgery process. Dr. Sina will take a detailed medical history and perform a detailed nasal examination. There can be medical causes of functional nasal complaints and it is important to identify and threat them prior to surgical intervention.

Dr. Sina considers the consultation as the best opportunity to help educate his patients. Too many times, patients will have surgery without an adequate understanding of the surgical process, and this is a leading cause of poor outcomes and low patient satisfaction. When you are in a consultation with Dr. Sina, he encourages you to ask as many questions as you have. If time becomes a constraint, patients are invited to come back for as many follow-up consultations as necessary until they feel comfortable with the entire surgical process.

The Functional Rhinoplasty Surgery

The first step is to identify the anatomic cause of the functional limitations a patient is experiencing. Once the source of the issues is identified, a pacific surgical plan with be employed.

Dr. Sina prefers to perform functional rhinoplasty surgery using general anesthesia and usually an open rhinoplasty technique for moderate to severe septal deviation.

  • In an open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the skin between the nostrils (the columella), allowing Dr. Sina to gain the best view of the nasal anatomy.
  • The next step is the septoplasty, where septal cartilage or bone that is obstructing the nasal passage is removed.
  • Patients requiring nasal valve repair will have cartilage grafts placed to open the valves or to support weak cartilages to prevent valve collapse during breathing.
  • Patients with enlarged turbinates will require a turbinate mucosa reduction, which will in turn improve nasal airflow.

What Is Functional Rhinoplasty Recovery Like?

After your functional rhinoplasty procedure, your nose will be congested, this is due to swelling from the surgery. Additionally, your nose may be runny for a few days. These symptoms resolve over the course of the first couple of weeks after surgery. The amount of swelling is determined by the amount of surgery required to correct the functional problems present prior to surgery.

Dr. Sina will provide you with specific instructions—be sure to follow these as closely as possible. With advances in surgical technique and Dr. Sina’s expert hand, most functional rhinoplasty patients have minimal bruising, even around the eyes. You should be able to return to work after about a week, with restrictions on strenuous exercise for up to three weeks.

When Will I Notice My Functional Rhinoplasty Results?

It takes a few weeks for all the internal nasal swelling to subside. Typically the first few days after surgery are marked by nasal congestion due to swelling and increased nasal mucus production. Dr. Sina sees all his post-operative patients personally and can clean and vacuum the nose to help improve symptoms of nasal congestion.
