The functional rhinoplasty consultation is a crucial part of the surgery process. Dr. Sina will take a detailed medical history and perform a detailed nasal examination. The Functional Rhinoplasty Surgery
The first step is to identify the anatomic cause of the functional limitations a patient is experiencing. Once the source of the issues is identified, a pacific surgical plan with be employed.
Dr. Sina prefers to perform functional rhinoplasty surgery using general anesthesia and usually an open rhinoplasty technique for moderate to severe septal deviation.
- In an open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the skin between the nostrils (the columella), allowing Dr. Sina to gain the best view of the nasal anatomy.
- The next step is the septoplasty, where septal cartilage or bone that is obstructing the nasal passage is removed.
- Patients requiring nasal valve repair will have cartilage grafts placed to open the valves or to support weak cartilages to prevent valve collapse during breathing.
- Patients with enlarged turbinates will require a turbinate mucosa reduction, which will in turn improve nasal airflow.
What Is Functional Rhinoplasty Recovery Like?
After your functional rhinoplasty procedure, your nose will be congested, this is due to swelling from the surgery. Additionally, your nose may be runny for a few days. These symptoms resolve over the course of the first couple of weeks after surgery.
